Best Wineries in Margaret River: A Local Chauffeur’s Recommendations

Margaret River is home to more than 200 wine producers, making it one of Australia’s most concentrated and diverse premium wine regions. From internationally acclaimed founding estates to small family-owned producers crafting wines in limited quantities, visitors are presented with an extraordinary range of experiences.

Through my work designing personalised wine tours throughout Margaret River and Geographe, I regularly visit wineries across the region and receive ongoing feedback from guests from Australia and around the world. I also spend considerable time visiting wineries and tasting current releases to maintain a firsthand understanding of the region’s wines, people and visitor experiences.

When recommending a winery, I consider wine quality, consistency, the cellar door experience, staff knowledge, hospitality, value for money, food offerings, setting, together with the feedback I receive from guests.

Rather than ranking wineries from first to last, I have grouped them into four categories that reflect their strengths and visitor appeal.

Margaret River Icons

The pioneering estates that helped establish Margaret River as one of Australia’s leading premium wine regions and continue to offer experiences many visitors wish to include at least once during a visit to the region.

Outstanding Contemporary Producers

Wineries that consistently deliver outstanding wine quality and visitor experiences. In my experience, they combine exceptional wines, knowledgeable staff, professional hospitality, engaging cellar door experiences and consistently positive guest feedback.

Established & Visitor-Focused Producers

Wineries that combine quality wines with memorable cellar door experiences, restaurants, scenery and hospitality. They are often particularly well suited to visitors seeking a broader food and wine experience.

Boutique, Alternative & Emerging Producers

Wineries that offer a more personal perspective through smaller production, alternative varieties, distinctive philosophies or less conventional approaches to winemaking. These producers often provide some of the region’s most individual and rewarding experiences.

While the categories above reflect my overall assessment of wineries based on wine quality, visitor experience and guest feedback, many visitors arrive with particular interests in mind. Whether your focus is Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, boutique producers or a memorable winery lunch, the following recommendations may help you identify wineries that best align with your preferences.

Best Cabernet Sauvignon Wineries in Margaret River

Cabernet Sauvignon is Margaret River’s signature variety and the foundation of the region’s international reputation. Combining power, structure and longevity with remarkable elegance, Margaret River Cabernet Sauvignon is regarded amongst the finest produced anywhere in the world.

Moss Wood, Cullen Wines, Vasse Felix, Leeuwin Estate, Cape Mentelle, Woodlands, Voyager Estate, Stella Bella and Xanadu Wines form the foundation of any Cabernet-focused itinerary.

Best Chardonnay Wineries in Margaret River

Chardonnay is Margaret River’s other great success story and has helped establish the region amongst the world’s leading producers of the variety. Combining power, precision and longevity with remarkable elegance, Margaret River Chardonnay is recognised amongst Australia’s finest white wines.

Leeuwin Estate, Cullen Wines, Vasse Felix, Pierro, Moss Wood, Deep Woods Estate, Fraser Gallop, Stella Bella, Domaine Naturaliste and Howard Park form the foundation of any Chardonnay-focused itinerary.

While Margaret River is best known for Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay, many of the region’s boutique and emerging producers are helping broaden its wine identity through alternative varieties, innovative winemaking and highly personalised visitor experiences. Often operating on a smaller scale, these wineries provide opportunities to engage more directly with the people, stories and philosophies behind the wines, while offering perspectives that differ from those of the region’s larger and more established estates.

LAS Vino, Marq Wines, Windows Estate, LS Merchants, Mr Barval and South by South West form the foundation of any itinerary focused on boutique, alternative and emerging producers. Together, they showcase the diversity, creativity and individuality that continue to shape Margaret River’s evolving wine landscape.

Best Winery Restaurants in Margaret River

Margaret River’s leading winery restaurants combine premium wines, regional produce and distinctive vineyard settings to create some of Western Australia’s most memorable dining experiences. For many visitors, lunch becomes a highlight of the day and an important part of understanding the region’s food and wine culture.

When planning a winery itinerary that includes an à la carte lunch experience, Leeuwin Estate, Voyager Estate, Xanadu, Wills Domain, Amelia Park and Glenarty Road provide some of Margaret River’s most complete food and wine experiences. Together, they combine quality wines, professional hospitality and memorable dining experiences within stunning vineyard settings.

Understanding Margaret River’s Wine Landscape

Despite its international reputation, Margaret River remains fundamentally a boutique wine region. According to the Margaret River Wine Association, 68% of producers crush less than 100 tonnes of Margaret River GI fruit annually. While the region is home to several internationally recognised wineries, much of its character is derived from small and medium-sized producers focused on quality, site expression and personal visitor experiences.

Region Producers Hectares Under Vine Signature Varieties
Margaret River 200+ 5,840 Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay
Geographe ~30 1,200 Chardonnay, Shiraz, Alternative varieties
Great Southern ~70 2,500 Riesling, Shiraz
Yarra Valley ~90 4,000 Pinot Noir, Chardonnay
Barossa Valley ~150 13,000 Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon
Hunter Valley 150+ 2,605 Semillon, Shiraz

While Margaret River is smaller in vineyard area than regions such as Barossa Valley, the concentration of wineries within a relatively compact geographic area provides visitors with an exceptional diversity of wine experiences.

Cullen Wines

Cullen Wines is one of Margaret River’s most influential and philosophically distinctive estates, renowned for its commitment to site expression, environmental stewardship, and some of the region’s most celebrated wines. Established in 1971 in Wilyabrup by Dr Kevin Cullen and Diana Cullen, the winery played a formative role in the development of Margaret River and remains family-owned more than fifty years later.

Today, under the stewardship of Vanya Cullen and senior winemaker Andy Barrett-Lennard, the estate continues to pursue a deeply considered approach to viticulture and winemaking. Certified organic and biodynamic, Cullen’s vineyards are farmed with a long-term focus on soil health, biodiversity, and vineyard resilience. The Cullen vineyard achieved biodynamic certification in 2004, followed by the Mangan vineyard and winery in 2008. Dry farming, natural ferments, minimal intervention, and gentle handling of fruit underpin a winemaking philosophy designed to express vineyard character with clarity and precision. Reflecting the seriousness of this commitment, Cullen became the first winery in Australia to achieve certified carbon-neutral status.

The Biodynamic Wine Room offers one of Margaret River’s most thoughtful and distinctive tasting experiences. Guided seated tastings explore not only the wines themselves, but also the farming practices, history, and philosophy that shape the estate. Flagship wines such as Diana Madeline and Kevin John are featured, allowing guests to experience the benchmark Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay for which Cullen is internationally recognised. The wider property further reflects the estate’s values, with biodynamic gardens supplying the kitchen and the Wannang storytelling setting providing a meaningful connection to place and culture.

Cullen’s strongest critical reputation rests on Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay, particularly through Diana Madeline and Kevin John, wines widely regarded among the finest expressions of their varieties in Australia. The portfolio includes Malbec, Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon. For visitors seeking an experience centred on viticulture, terroir, and the disciplined pursuit of quality, Cullen offers one of the most compelling and intellectually rewarding cellar door experiences in Margaret River.

Leeuwin Estate

Established in 1973 by Denis and Tricia Horgan, with early mentorship by Napa Valley’s Robert Mondavi, Leeuwin Estate is one of the region’s founding estates and remains influential not only for its wines, but for the way it integrates landscape, art, and music. The property is set among expansive lawns and tall karri forest, giving it a sense of scale and calm that is immediately apparent on arrival.

Now under the stewardship of three generations of the founding family, who work alongside a team of dedicated viticulturalists and winemakers, the focus remains firmly on sustainable viticulture showcasing the purity and clarity of fruit to create site expressive wines of the finest quality.

The estate is widely recognised for its Art Series wines, particularly Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon, which have built a long-standing reputation in Australia and internationally for balance, structure, and longevity. The portfolio includes Riesling, Shiraz and Sauvignon Blanc.

Beyond the cellar door, Leeuwin’s cultural footprint is significant. Beneath the restaurant, the Art Gallery houses a substantial collection of Australian contemporary artworks commissioned for the Art Series labels, offering a quiet and reflective space that connects visual art with the estate’s broader philosophy.

The grounds also form a natural amphitheatre for the Leeuwin Concert Series. Over the years, internationally renowned artists have performed here, and the arcade displaying concert artwork and artist history provides a visual record of those performances. Together with the lawns and surrounding forest, this creates a setting that feels as much like a cultural venue as a winery, making Leeuwin a natural stop even for guests who are primarily here for the setting rather than the glass.

Voyager Estate

Established in 1978 by viticulturist Peter Gherardi, the estate was later purchased and developed in 1991 by Michael Wright, a farmer and regional pioneer. Michael and his family settled on the site in Stevens Valley because he recognised that the maritime influence and microclimate had the potential to produce world-class wines.

To this day, Voyager Estate remains a small, family-owned and independently run business, now led by Michael Wright’s daughter Alexandra Burt, who continues the family’s commitment to producing wines of place through organic farming and low-intervention winemaking.

Voyager Estate has established itself as one of Margaret River’s leading wine producers, earning widespread acclaim for Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon that combine precision, balance, and a strong sense of place. The broader portfolio includes Chenin Blanc, Syrah, Malbec, Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon.

Whitewashed walls, symmetrical gables, manicured gardens, and expansive lawns create a sense of refinement and permanence rarely matched elsewhere in the region. Rather than feeling like a commercial winery, the property presents as a grand country estate where architecture, landscape, hospitality, and wine are seamlessly integrated.

For visitors, Voyager offers one of Margaret River’s most complete wine experiences. Voyager Estate

Cape Mentelle

Cape Mentelle is one of Margaret River’s founding wineries and occupies a significant place in the history of Australian wine. Established in 1970 by David Hohnen and his brothers Mark and Giles, the estate was among the pioneering vineyards that helped transform Margaret River from an emerging viticultural experiment into one of the country’s most respected wine regions.

National recognition arrived in the early 1980s when Cape Mentelle achieved the rare distinction of winning the prestigious Jimmy Watson Trophy in consecutive years, for its 1982 and 1983 Cabernet Sauvignon vintages. At a time when Margaret River was still largely unknown to Australian wine consumers, these awards provided compelling evidence of the region’s ability to produce world-class Cabernet Sauvignon and helped place Margaret River firmly on the national wine map.

Today, Cape Mentelle produces a diverse portfolio spanning Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz, Chardonnay, Zinfandel, Cabernet Franc, Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon. While innovation remains an important part of the estate’s culture, Cabernet Sauvignon continues to sit at the heart of the winery’s reputation, supported by a long-standing commitment to vineyard quality, varietal expression and regional character.

The estate balances its pioneering heritage with a contemporary approach to winemaking, continually exploring new techniques and varieties while remaining grounded in the strengths of the Margaret River region. Visitors are offered the opportunity to experience both the history of one of Margaret River’s most influential wineries and the ongoing evolution of a producer that continues to contribute to the region’s reputation for quality and innovation.

Under the stewardship of Jeff and Amy Burch, the winery has evolved from its Great Southern origins into one of Western Australia’s most influential wine businesses, helping to elevate the reputation of both regions through sustained investment in vineyards and winemaking.

The winery’s strength lies in its access to premium vineyard sites across Western Australia – Leston and Allingham in Margaret River and Mount Barrow and Abercrombie in the Great Southern, allowing Howard Park to showcase the distinctive strengths of each region. Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon and Riesling form the backbone of the portfolio, while fruit from the family-owned Pemberton vineyard contributes to the traditional-method Jeté sparkling wine range which has become one of Western Australia’s most respected sparkling wine programs. Clairault Streicker

Clairault Streicker brings together two important chapters of Margaret River wine history. The Clairault vineyard, established in 1976 in Wilyabrup, is one of the region’s older vineyard sites, while the Streicker vineyards were acquired by John H. Streicker from 2002 onwards and expanded the estate’s footprint across Margaret River.

Today, Clairault Streicker owns and manages four distinct vineyard sites spanning the length of the region, from Yallingup in the north to Karridale in the south. These include the historic Clairault Vineyard and Ironstone Vineyard in Wilyabrup, Bridgeland Vineyard in Karridale and the Yallingup Vineyard. Together, the four properties comprise more than 200 hectares under vine and provide access to a diverse range of soils, elevations and climatic conditions.

This vineyard diversity underpins a broad portfolio led by Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon, together with Petit Verdot, Sauvignon Blanc Semillon, Syrah, Pinot Noir and Chenin Blanc. Fruit sourced from both northern and southern Margaret River allows the winemaking team, led by Bruce Dukes, to explore the stylistic differences that exist across the region’s varied vineyard sites.

The cellar door and vineyard restaurant provide a welcoming introduction to Margaret River wine and hospitality. Combined with four decades of viticultural history, extensive vineyard holdings and a broad range of wine styles, Clairault Streicker offers visitors an excellent opportunity to experience the diversity of the Margaret River Wine Region through a single producer.

The winery produces a broad range of classic Margaret River varieties, including Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon and Syrah. The range extends across multiple price points, providing visitors with an excellent introduction to both classic and contemporary Margaret River winemaking.

The cellar door experience is a particular strength. Tastings are conducted in a seated format and guided by knowledgeable hosts who provide detailed insights into the wines, vineyards and winemaking philosophy. Combined with consistently high wine quality, professional hospitality and an approachable atmosphere, Domaine Naturaliste offers one of Margaret River’s most rewarding tasting experiences.

Domaine Naturalist

Stella Bella

Established in 1996, Stella Bella has become one of Margaret River’s leading contemporary producers and an advocate for the distinctive character of Southern Margaret River vineyards. The winery sources fruit from five vineyard sites located throughout the southern part of the region, where cooler temperatures, greater cloud cover and strong maritime influences contribute to a longer growing season and slower ripening conditions. These conditions help preserve natural acidity while allowing flavours and tannins to develop gradually, producing wines noted for their elegance, freshness, structure and site expression.

Through wines sourced from multiple vineyard sites, visitors can gain an appreciation of the influence that climate, aspect and soil have on the expression of Margaret River’s classic varieties.

Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon and Sauvignon Blanc Semillon form the foundation of the portfolio, while the flagship Luminosa and Suckfizzle ranges represent the winery’s highest-tier vineyard selections. The range also extends beyond Margaret River’s traditional strengths to include varieties such as Pinot Grigio, Grenache, Sangiovese and Tempranillo.

Flametree Wines

Established in 2007, Flametree Wines has built a reputation for producing high-quality wines across a broad range of varieties and styles. Unlike many Margaret River producers, Flametree does not rely on estate-owned vineyards. Instead, the winery sources fruit from carefully selected growers throughout the region, allowing the winemaking team to match vineyard sites to specific wine styles and focus on fruit quality and regional expression.

Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon sit at the heart of the portfolio. The premium S.R.S. (Sub-Regional Series) range showcases wines sourced from exceptional vineyard sites and includes Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah, highlighting the influence that location and terroir can have on wine style. The broader range extends to Sauvignon Blanc Semillon, Pinot Grigio, Rosé, Shiraz, Vermentino, Pinot Noir and sparkling wines, providing visitors with an opportunity to explore a diverse cross-section of Margaret River winemaking.

A particular strength of Flametree is the breadth of its offering. While many wineries focus primarily on Margaret River’s traditional strengths, Flametree has developed a reputation across numerous varieties and wine styles, making it especially appealing to visitors seeking a broader introduction to the region’s wines.

Located on Caves Road in the northern part of the Margaret River Wine Region, the cellar door is conveniently positioned for visitors staying in Busselton, Dunsborough, Yallingup and Bunker Bay. McHenry Hohnen

Established in 2004 by David Hohnen and Murray McHenry, McHenry Hohnen combines two families with deep connections to Margaret River wine. David Hohnen was a founder of Cape Mentelle and later Cloudy Bay in New Zealand, while the McHenry family has farmed in Margaret River for generations. The partnership was founded with a focus on producing wines that reflect individual vineyard sites and the natural character of the region.

The winery sources fruit from several vineyards in the southern part of the wine region. Organic and biodynamic farming practices form an important part of the viticultural philosophy, with an emphasis on soil health, biodiversity and long-term vineyard sustainability. While Chardonnay and the classic Bordeaux varieties remain the foundation for the portfolio, the winery embraces the region’s potential for alternative expressions including Grenache, Marsanne, Roussanne, Mataro and Zinfandel.

A defining feature of McHenry Hohnen is its focus on vineyard expression. Wines are produced using a relatively restrained winemaking approach designed to allow vineyard character to remain at the forefront. The resulting portfolio ranges from regional blends through to single-vineyard wines that highlight the diversity of Margaret River’s growing environments.

With a strong focus on sustainability, thoughtful vineyard management and site-driven winemaking, McHenry Hohnen has become one of Margaret River’s most distinctive contemporary producers.

Cherubino

Established by Larry and Edwina Cherubino in 2005, Cherubino combines vineyard holdings across Margaret River, Frankland River, Pemberton and Mount Barker. The foundations of the business were laid with the purchase of a vineyard in Frankland River, a region that remains central to the winery’s identity and continues to contribute fruit for some of its most highly regarded wines.

The diversity of vineyard locations allows Cherubino to work across a broad range of climates and varieties. Margaret River contributes Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon, while the cooler regions of Frankland River, Mount Barker and Pemberton provide ideal conditions for Riesling, Syrah and a range of Mediterranean varieties. The portfolio includes Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Riesling, Syrah, Fiano, Vermentino, Nebbiolo, Sangiovese and Tempranillo, reflecting Larry Cherubino’s long-standing interest in matching varieties to site.

The Wilyabrup cellar door offers one of the most diverse tasting experiences in Margaret River, allowing visitors to compare wines from several Western Australian wine regions within a single tasting. This regional breadth provides a broader perspective on Western Australian wine than is available at most Margaret River cellar doors.

Located adjacent to the cellar door, Masseria Restaurant adds a further dimension to the visitor experience. Set beside a lake and rose garden, the restaurant focuses on Italian-inspired cuisine with a South West influence and a strong emphasis on seasonal produce and wine pairing. Combined with accommodation, dining and a portfolio that extends well beyond Margaret River, Cherubino offers one of the region’s most diverse wine and food experiences.

Willespie

Established in 1976, the estate was founded by Kevin and Marian Squance, school teachers whose vision was rooted in a deep respect for the land. Willespie has grown from a boutique family vineyard into one of the region’s respected producers of expressive, terroir-driven wines.

A distinguishing feature of Willespie is its focus on mature-vine fruit, aged wines and fortified styles. The vineyard produces wines of elegance, concentration and structure, while providing visitors with an opportunity to explore how Margaret River wines evolve with bottle age.

Museum releases may include Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Cabernet Franc, Shiraz, Verdelho, Semillon and Sauvignon Blanc, offering a rare opportunity to compare current and mature vintages within a single tasting experience.

Evans & Tate

Established in 1971 by John Evans and John Tate, Evans & Tate is one of Margaret River’s pioneering wine brands. The Redbrook vineyard, located in Wilyabrup, has long been central to the winery’s identity and played an important role in establishing the reputation of Margaret River during the region’s formative years.

The winery’s fortunes have varied over its history; however, under the ownership of Fogarty Wine Group, Evans & Tate has entered a new period of stability supported by vineyard rejuvenation, new plantings and ongoing investment in the brand.

The range is centred on Margaret River’s signature varieties, including Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Shiraz, Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon, providing visitors with an introduction to the styles that have helped define the region.

A notable aspect of the winery’s history is its long-standing success at the Margaret River Wine Show. Evans & Tate has been awarded Most Successful Exhibitor on multiple occasions, including 2005, 2006, 2008, 2014, 2015, 2017 and most recently 2025, placing it among the most successful exhibitors in the history of the show.

Situated in the heart of Wilyabrup, the estate benefits from one of the region’s most highly regarded grape-growing areas, with vineyards that consistently produce fruit of exceptional quality.

The winery is particularly recognised for Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay, while the broad portfolio includes Semillon, Sauvignon Blanc, Shiraz, Malbec, Merlot and Pinot Gris varieties.

Fermoy has established itself as one of Margaret River’s most consistent producers.

Idée Fixe

Idée Fixe occupies a unique position within Margaret River as a winery dedicated exclusively to traditional-method Blanc de Blancs sparkling wine. Established by Vasse Felix, the project culminated in the creation of a purpose-built sparkling wine facility in 2018, allowing every stage of production to be completed on site.

Fruit is sourced from the Idée Fixe Vineyard in Karridale, located in the southern part of the Margaret River Wine Region. The vineyard comprises approximately 29 hectares and is planted predominantly to Chardonnay. Situated close to the Southern Ocean, the site experiences cooler growing conditions than many northern Margaret River vineyards and is characterised by sandy loam soils over quartz breccia deposits.

A defining feature of the vineyard is its collection of Chardonnay clones, including several traditionally associated with sparkling wine production. These plantings provide the foundation for Idée Fixe’s Blanc de Blancs wines and contribute to the freshness, acidity and structure required for traditional-method sparkling wine.

For visitors seeking something beyond Margaret River’s traditional focus on Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay table wines, Idée Fixe offers a distinctive perspective on the region’s viticultural potential and demonstrates the suitability of Southern Margaret River Chardonnay for premium sparkling wine production.

Thompson Estate

Established by Jane and Peter Thompson, Thompson Estate is a family-owned winery located in Wilyabrup. The property was acquired in 1994, with the first plantings of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir established in 1997, followed by Cabernet Sauvignon in 1998. Today, the estate comprises approximately 32 hectares under vine, including newer plantings of Burgundian Chardonnay clones.

The winery has developed a reputation for producing elegant, classically styled Margaret River wines with a strong emphasis on vineyard expression and balance. Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay are the principal varieties and form the foundation of the range, with the Specialist wines representing the estate’s flagship releases.

Semillon Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Noir, Shiraz and Merlot complement the range, providing visitors with an opportunity to explore a broad cross-section of Margaret River wine styles. The cellar door offers a relaxed tasting experience focused on estate-grown wines and the character of the Wilyabrup locality.

Established & Visitor-Focused Producers

These wineries have established strong reputations through a combination of wine quality, hospitality and visitor appeal. Many are long-standing members of the Margaret River wine community and offer experiences that extend beyond the tasting bench, including acclaimed restaurants, vineyard dining, distinctive architecture, art, history and spectacular settings. While their strengths may differ from those of the region’s most critically acclaimed fine wine estates, they consistently provide memorable experiences that showcase the diversity and appeal of Margaret River wine tourism.

Wills Domain

Wills Domain is a family-owned 20 hectare estate overlooking the Gunyulgup Valley near Yallingup. Established on vineyards planted in 1992, the property was acquired by the Haunold family in 2000, continuing a family involvement in wine that traces its origins to Austria in 1383.

Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz form the foundation of the range, while the vineyard is also planted to Semillon, Sauvignon Blanc and Viognier. The Paladin wines, including the Bordeaux-inspired Paladin Matrix blend, represent the estate’s flagship releases.

The estate’s Cuvée d’Élevage sparkling wines are produced using the traditional méthode traditionnelle and released in limited quantities. The Blanc de Blancs and Rosé mature for more than twelve months on lees, while the Chardonnay Pinot Noir spends approximately three years on secondary fermentation lees prior to release. The Vintage Cuvée d’Élevage is limited to approximately 400 bottles annually.

Edwards Wines

Established by Brian and Jenny Edwards in 1991, Edwards Wines is a family-owned winery situated high above the Wilyabrup Valley. The property was selected for its gravelly loam soils and favourable vineyard conditions, with the first Semillon vines planted in 1993. Subsequent plantings included Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon, while more recent additions of Merlot, Grenache, Malbec and Cabernet Franc have expanded the vineyard to approximately 22 hectares.

Today, Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon remain central to the range, complemented by Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon, Shiraz and a selection of alternative varieties. Visitors can also explore the Ocean Series wines, which are matured for approximately twelve months beneath the waters of Flinders Bay near Augusta. Bottles are lowered to a depth of around 18 metres before being retrieved and released with their distinctive marine-encrusted appearance.

The cellar door enjoys sweeping views across the Wilyabrup Valley and houses Matilda, founder Brian Edwards’ restored Tiger Moth aircraft. Together with displays reflecting Brian’s aviation background and adventures, the aircraft provides a distinctive backdrop to the tasting experience and creates one of Margaret River’s more memorable cellar door settings.

Visitors can also explore the separate Flow Gallery, which adds a further artistic dimension to the estate and complements one of the region’s most distinctive visitor experiences.

Hay Shed Hill Wines

Hay Shed Hill is one of Margaret River’s longest-established vineyards, with the original vines planted in 1973 on the historic Sussex Vale property in Wilyabrup. Located approximately five kilometres from the Indian Ocean, the vineyard benefits from strong maritime influences and occupies a series of elevated hillsides with varying aspects. Chardonnay is planted on cooler south-facing slopes, while Cabernet Sauvignon thrives on warmer north-facing slopes. Much of the vineyard is dry grown, producing low yields and fruit with concentration and varietal character.

Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon form the foundation of the range, complemented by Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, Sauvignon Blanc Semillon, Shiraz, Riesling and a selection of alternative varieties. Estate-grown wines are released under the Vineyard and Block Series labels, while the Pitchfork range is produced from selected grower fruit sourced from across Margaret River.

The cellar door provides a welcoming tasting experience overlooking the vineyard, while the restaurant showcases seasonal local produce in a relaxed rural setting. Together with its historic vineyard, picturesque location and broad range of wines, Hay Shed Hill remains a popular destination for visitors seeking both wine and dining experiences in the heart of Wilyabrup.

Lenton Brae

Established in Wilyabrup in 1982, Lenton Brae is a family-owned winery that has developed a reputation for producing approachable, high-quality wines across a broad range of varieties. The vineyard occupies a north-facing hillside site in the Wilyabrup locality, where gravelly loam soils and strong maritime influences provide favourable conditions for premium grape growing.

The estate is planted to 19 varietal clones and combines Margaret River’s traditional strengths with less common grape varieties. A particular focus is placed on the classic Bordeaux varieties of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Semillon and Sauvignon Blanc, complemented by Chardonnay and Chenin Blanc. Alternative varieties including Mourvèdre, Marsanne and Touriga Nacional further contribute to the vineyard’s diversity. Notably, Lenton Brae is the only producer of Pinot Blanc in the Margaret River Wine Region.

The premium Wilyabrup range represents the winery’s flagship collection and includes Chardonnay, Semillon and Cabernet Sauvignon sourced exclusively from Wilyabrup fruit. The winery also produces limited quantities of traditional-method sparkling wine, further reflecting the versatility of the vineyard.

The cellar door offers a welcoming and relaxed tasting experience, allowing visitors to explore both classic Margaret River varieties and wines that are rarely encountered elsewhere in the region. The combination of established vineyards, varietal diversity and approachable hospitality has made Lenton Brae a popular destination for visitors to Wilyabrup.

Driftwood Estate

Driftwood Estate is a family-owned winery whose origins date to 1980 when Tom and Helen Galopoulos purchased the property in Wilyabrup as a rural retreat for their family. Inspired by Tom’s Greek family heritage and a lifelong connection to viticulture, the first vines were planted in 1989, establishing what would become one of Margaret River’s enduring family wine estates. The winery takes its name from a piece of driftwood discovered by the family on nearby Quininup Beach.

The estate first gained recognition with its 1993 Semillon and has since developed a reputation for producing wines that reflect the strengths of the Wilyabrup locality. Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay form the foundation of the range, complemented by Sauvignon Blanc, Shiraz, Petit Verdot and Malbec.

The Single Site and Artifacts collections represent the winery’s flagship releases, showcasing fruit sourced from selected vineyard parcels and reflecting the estate’s focus on site expression and varietal character.

The cellar door offers a relaxed tasting experience overlooking the vineyards, providing visitors with an opportunity to explore a broad range of wines from one of Margaret River’s long-established family-owned producers.

Credaro Family Estate

Credaro Family Estate is one of Margaret River’s longest-established family-owned wine businesses, with the Credaro family farming in the region since 1922. The family’s history began when Cesare Credaro emigrated from Italy and purchased land in Carbunup, establishing a farming legacy that has continued for more than a century.

Initially, small vineyard plantings were maintained in the European tradition to provide wine for family consumption. Today, Credaro manages vineyards across multiple sites within the Margaret River Wine Region, including holdings in Carbunup, Yallingup and Wilyabrup, providing access to a diverse range of vineyard sites and growing conditions.

Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon form the foundation of the range, complemented by Sauvignon Blanc Semillon, Shiraz, Pinot Grigio and a growing collection of Italian varieties. The Eredità range, introduced in 2024, celebrates the family’s Italian heritage through varieties including Montepulciano, Nebbiolo, Fiano, Lagrein and Barbera. Credaro also continues the family’s long association with Fragola, a variety first planted by Cesare Credaro in 1922.

The cellar door offers a welcoming tasting experience overlooking the Yallingup hills and surrounding vineyards. Family ownership remains central to the business, providing visitors with a direct connection to one of Margaret River’s oldest agricultural and wine-growing stories.

Wise Wine

Wise Wine was established in 1992 when biochemist Dr Ron Wise and his wife Sandra acquired Geographe Bay Estate, originally founded in 1983, and combined it with their neighbouring Eagle Bay property. Early development of the winery involved viticultural advice from Warren Randall and winemaking by Dorham Mann, whose father, Jack Mann, was one of Western Australia’s most influential wine pioneers.

Wise Wine sources fruit from selected vineyards across the Margaret River and the Great Southern wine regions. This approach allows the winery to produce a diverse range of wines while showcasing the strengths of different vineyard sites and regional climates.

The range includes Margaret River classics such as Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon and Sauvignon Blanc Semillon, together with alternative varieties and contemporary wine styles. Small-batch winemaking and careful fruit selection remain central to the winery’s approach.

Perched on a hillside between Dunsborough and Eagle Bay, Wise Wine enjoys panoramic views across Geographe Bay, surrounding vineyards and the bushland of Meelup Regional Park. The combination of food, wine and scenery has established Wise as one of the region’s most popular lunch destinations.

Happs Wines

Established in 1978 by Erl and Ros Happ, Happs is one of Margaret River’s pioneering family-owned wineries and remains one of the region’s most distinctive visitor experiences. The winery shares its home with Commonage Pottery, reflecting the family’s long-standing connection to both winemaking and the arts.

Long-time winemaker Mark Warren has overseen production since 2003 and is widely respected within the Western Australian wine industry for his technical expertise, judging experience and commitment to maintaining the diversity and quality of the Happs portfolio.

While Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon form part of the range, Happs is particularly recognised for its willingness to explore alternative varieties such as Verdelho, Nebbiolo, Sangiovese and Tannat, together with a long-standing range of preservative-free wines that helped establish the winery’s reputation for innovation.

A defining feature of Happs is its relaxed self-guided tasting format, allowing visitors to sample a broad selection of wines at their own pace. Combined with the pottery gallery, family-friendly atmosphere and diverse range of wines, Happs offers one of the most individual and approachable cellar door experiences in Margaret River.

Gralyn Estate

Established in 1975 by Merilyn and Graham Hutton, Gralyn Estate is one of Margaret River’s pioneering wineries and was home to the region’s first cellar door. Today, the estate remains family-owned, with second-generation custodians Annette and Scott Baxter overseeing both vineyard and winemaking operations.

Located in Wilyabrup, just a few kilometres from the Indian Ocean, the estate is planted to Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Semillon, Shiraz and Malbec. Fruit is sourced exclusively from mature, non-irrigated estate vineyards, with vineyard management guided by organic principles and a strong emphasis on site expression.

While Gralyn is recognised for premium Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay, the winery has also established one of Australia’s most respected fortified wine programmes. Vintage and barrel-aged fortified wines have been produced continuously since the late 1970s and remain a defining part of the estate’s identity.

Produced in relatively small quantities and available exclusively through the cellar door, the wines have earned a loyal following amongst visitors.

The cellar door provides an opportunity to explore both classic Margaret River varieties and an extensive range of fortified wines, including museum releases and older vintage fortifieds that showcase the estate’s long history of production. This diversity, combined with decades of family ownership and winemaking experience, has helped establish Gralyn Estate as one of Margaret River’s most distinctive boutique wineries.

Boutique, Alternative & Emerging Producers

LAS Vino

LAS Vino has emerged as one of Margaret River’s most distinctive boutique producers, founded by winemaker Nic Peterkin and recognised for a willingness to challenge conventional approaches to Margaret River wine. While maintaining a strong focus on vineyard expression and wine quality, the winery has become known for exploring alternative techniques that seek freshness, balance and which express the unique terroir of each site.

The range includes Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Sauvignon Blanc and Chenin Blanc, together with a series of small-batch releases produced from carefully selected vineyard sites. Winemaking often incorporates earlier picking dates, minimal handling, whole-bunch pressing and the use of alternative maturation vessels, including ceramic eggs and amphorae for selected wines. These techniques are employed to preserve natural acidity, texture and varietal character rather than maximise ripeness or extraction.

Chenin Blanc has become a particular focus for the winery and has played an important role in demonstrating the variety’s potential within Margaret River. Through both traditional and less conventional approaches, LAS Vino continues to offer an alternative perspective on what Margaret River wines can be.

For visitors interested in small-batch production, site-driven wines and contemporary winemaking philosophies, LAS Vino provides one of the region’s more distinctive tasting experiences.

Marq Wines

Established by winemaker Mark Warren, Marq Wines focuses on small-batch wines produced entirely from Margaret River fruit sourced from vineyard sites in Yallingup, Wilyabrup and Karridale. A highly experienced winemaker, Warren has been producing wines in Margaret River and the Swan Valley for more than two decades and is also known for his long association with Happs Wines, wine judging and his former role teaching Wine Science and Advanced Sensory Evaluation at Curtin University’s Margaret River campus.

The range is centred on alternative varieties selected for their suitability to Margaret River’s climate and growing conditions. Vermentino, Fiano, Gros Manseng, Gamay, Tempranillo, Malbec, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot feature prominently, offering visitors an opportunity to explore grape varieties not commonly encountered elsewhere in the region.

Winemaking techniques vary according to variety and vintage, drawing on approaches including wild yeast fermentation and the Italian appassimento method, where grapes are partially dried prior to fermentation to concentrate flavour and structure. Small production volumes allow individual parcels to be fermented and matured separately, providing flexibility to explore different varieties, techniques and wine styles.

For visitors who have already explored Margaret River’s traditional strengths, Marq Wines offers a distinctive perspective on the region’s capacity to produce alternative varieties and less conventional wine styles.

LS Merchants

Established in 2015 by winemaker Dylan Arvidson, LS Merchants takes a different approach to many Margaret River producers by sourcing fruit from a diverse network of growers across Western Australia’s leading wine regions, including Margaret River, Frankland River, Pemberton, Manjimup, Blackwood Valley and the Swan Valley. This allows the winery to work with varieties and vineyard sites best suited to particular wine styles rather than relying on a single estate or region.

The range includes both traditional and alternative varieties, with Vermentino, Chenin Blanc, Gewurztraminer, Sangiovese, Mataro, Nebbiolo and Touriga Nacional sitting alongside more familiar Margaret River styles. The wines are generally produced in small batches, with an emphasis on preserving vineyard character and reflecting seasonal conditions.

Rather than adhering to a strict natural wine philosophy, LS Merchants adopts a pragmatic minimal-intervention approach. Natural fermentations are encouraged where conditions allow, while fining, filtration and other winemaking techniques are employed when required to achieve the desired wine style and quality.

The cellar door provides visitors with an opportunity to explore wines sourced from multiple Western Australian regions within a single tasting experience. Combined with an eclectic range of varieties and a relaxed approach to wine, LS Merchants offers a perspective that differs from many traditional Margaret River producers.

Windance Estate

Established in 1998 by Drew and Rosemary Brent-White, Windance Estate is a family-owned certified biodynamic vineyard located on the Yallingup Coastal Ridge, approximately five kilometres south of Yallingup. Today, the estate is operated by the second generation of the family, with daughter Billie Brent-White and her husband Michael continuing the family’s commitment to sustainable viticulture and small-scale wine production.

The 8.5-hectare vineyard occupies a north-facing slope and is planted to Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon, Chardonnay, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec, Shiraz and Grenache. Situated in the northern part of the Margaret River Wine Region, the site experiences a warmer and drier growing season than many southern vineyards, while gravelly loam soils and pockets of deep red soil provide favourable conditions for premium grape production.

The range includes Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Merlot, Cabernet Shiraz, Chardonnay, Chenin Blanc, Sauvignon Blanc Semillon and sparkling wines, reflecting both the strengths of the vineyard and the family’s commitment to site-driven winemaking. Combined with its biodynamic credentials and welcoming cellar door, Windance offers visitors a highly personal and authentic Margaret River wine experience.

Windows Estate

First planted in 1996, Windows Estate is a certified organic, single-vineyard estate located in the northern part of Margaret River. After initially supplying fruit to other producers, the estate released its first wines under the Windows label in 2006.

The vineyard comprises several distinct blocks planted across varying elevations and soil profiles, including laterite, clay, granite and quartz-rich sites. Dry-farmed and managed under certified organic practices, the vineyard reflects owner Chris Davies’ long-standing belief that wine quality is determined primarily in the vineyard. His hands-on approach extends from pruning through to harvest, with a strong focus on site expression and vine health.

The estate produces Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Chenin Blanc, Semillon, Sauvignon Blanc, Malbec, Petit Verdot and Syrah, together with traditional-method sparkling wine. Individual vineyard blocks contribute different characteristics to the wines, reflecting the diversity of soils, aspects and microclimates found across the property.

The cellar door provides a highly personal tasting experience overlooking the vineyard and surrounding bushland. Combined with its single-vineyard focus, certified organic farming and meticulous attention to viticulture, Windows Estate has developed a strong reputation amongst visitors seeking small-scale, site-driven Margaret River wines.

Mr Barval

Mr Barval reflects both a deep connection to Italian wine culture and extensive experience gained in Margaret River and northern Italy. Raised in a multi-generational Italian family where annual grape harvests and home winemaking were long-standing traditions, winemaker Robert Gherardi initially completed degrees in Marine Science and Biotechnology before pursuing formal studies in Oenology and Viticulture.

His winemaking career included positions at Moss Wood, Brown Hill Estate and Cullen Wines, where he developed an appreciation for fine winemaking and biodynamic viticulture. Encouraged by Vanya Cullen, Gherardi later travelled to Piedmont, spending several vintages with Barolo producers Elio Altare and Conterno Fantino. These experiences continue to influence both his vineyard philosophy and winemaking approach.

The range of varieties include Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Viognier, Nebbiolo, Marsanne and Roussanne. Fruit is sourced from carefully selected vineyard sites in Wilyabrup, Wallcliffe and Karridale, reflecting Gherardi’s belief that exceptional wines begin with exceptional vineyard sites.

Winemaking draws heavily on traditional techniques, including indigenous yeast fermentations, hand harvesting, whole-bunch pressing for white wines, basket pressing and minimal handling throughout maturation. Wines are typically bottled unfined and unfiltered, with an emphasis on preserving vineyard character, regional identity and vintage expression.

Nestled beside Calgardup Brook and framed by forest and vineyard, the Mr Barval cellar door offers a relaxed and welcoming setting in which to explore the wines and philosophy behind one of Margaret River’s more individual producers.

Marri Wood Park

Established in 1992 and located in Yallingup, Marri Wood Park is a family-owned boutique producer and one of Margaret River’s longest-standing Demeter-certified biodynamic vineyards. The vineyard focuses on a small range of varieties including Cabernet Sauvignon, Sauvignon Blanc, Chenin Blanc and Semillon.

Biodynamic principles underpin both vineyard management and winemaking, with fruit hand-picked and crafted using a combination of traditional and contemporary techniques, including fermentation in amphora and oak. The wines are made by respected Margaret River winemaker Nick Peterkin, whose low-intervention approach complements the vineyard’s biodynamic philosophy. The emphasis is on producing wines that reflect the character of the vineyard and its coastal Yallingup location.

For visitors interested in biodynamic viticulture, alternative winemaking approaches or authentic boutique winery experiences, Marri Wood Park offers a distinctive and worthwhile stop.

House of Cards Wines

Established by husband-and-wife team Travis and Elizabeth Wray, House of Cards Wines is a family-owned boutique producer located in Yallingup. The winery takes its name from the risks inherent in grape growing and winemaking, reflecting the reality that every vintage presents different opportunities and challenges.

Winemaker Travis Wray studied Viticulture and Oenology at Curtin University and gained experience with several respected Margaret River producers, including Vasse Felix and Fermoy Estate, as well as wineries in New Zealand and Canada. Fruit is sourced exclusively from the estate’s certified organic vineyard, which was planted in 1997.

The portfolio is centred on Margaret River’s traditional strengths, particularly Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay, while also incorporating Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon, Pinot Noir, Grenache, Syrah and Malbec. Produced in relatively small quantities, the wines emphasise regional character, balance and vineyard expression.

For visitors, House of Cards offers a welcoming and personalised tasting experience that reflects its family ownership and small-scale production.

Walsh & Sons

Established in 2013 by Ryan Walsh and Freya Hohnen, Walsh & Sons brings together two families with long-standing connections to Margaret River wine.

Ryan Walsh is widely regarded as one of Margaret River’s most thoughtful and innovative winemakers. The family-owned Burnside and Osmington vineyards are managed using organic and biodynamic principles, while the winemaking philosophy emphasises site expression and minimal intervention.

The portfolio combines Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay with varieties including Semillon, Riesling, Pinot Noir, Syrah and Grenache.

Produced in relatively small quantities, the wines are recognised for their freshness, balance and individuality. For visitors interested in progressive viticulture and contemporary winemaking, Walsh & Sons offers one of the region’s most distinctive boutique producers.

My Recommendation

Whether you are seeking iconic wineries, boutique cellar doors, exceptional winery restaurants or world-class Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay, Margaret River offers one of Australia’s most rewarding wine tourism experiences.

The most memorable winery itineraries are rarely those that visit the greatest number of iconic, leading or boutique, alternative or emerging producers. More often, they are the itineraries that match the visitor’s interests, wine preferences, pace of travel and desired style of experience.

If you are planning a visit to Margaret River and would like recommendations tailored to your interests, I would be pleased to assist.
